Dr. McDonald has since worked in a wide variety of optometry practice modalities: independent private practice, optical settings, nursing home-based practice, and industry research. She was the Energeyes Association (AACO) Recent Graduate Keynote Speaker in the year following her graduation.

Dr. McDonald served as the Principal Investigator in an applied clinical science research project that led to the development of Acuvue Define contact lenses.
